How-To Conquer Short Attention Spans During Presentations

How-To Conquer Short Attention Spans During Presentations | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it
Being compared to a goldfish is not a good thing. Goldfish are given away in plastic bags in exchange for pocket change at fairs. If your new pet goldfish dies, most people would suggest flushing it down the toilet, or tossing it in the trash. Kinda sad, huh? The story gets even sadder when you consider that in some situations the human mind is inferior to the mind of a common goldfish, at least in regards to attention span.

Despite occasional inferiority to a goldfish, the human brain is a powerful organ capable of completing complex tasks that require enormous amounts of focus. Thus, if your presentation does not inspire your audience to stretch their attention spans beyond the limits of a small fish, it is your fault. Don’t place blame on modern lifestyle habits, or technology. Take responsibility for keeping the audience engaged during your presentation. Use these 5 tips to connect with your audience members, and expand their attention spans to the length of your talk.

rodrick rajive lal's insight:

Oh, I guess, even the poerpoint presentations do become tedious and boring after some time. This might happen when they are used too frequently and are not planned really well. In many cases presentations should be backed up with questionnaires, feed back forms and even exit tickets. And bring about frequent breaks to pull the bored ones back to life! Also, remember the rule of the eight minute attention span. Mix your presentation with energisers, disussions, and brain storming sessions! I have known of teachers themselves who soon began to travel to the land of the nod during a presentation that went on and on. Thankfully the presenter made use of energisers and a Q & A session to bring everyone back!

The online tools in this articele can prove to be a boon to writers. While one of these helps with editing and correcting syntactical errors, the other helps provide an idea about the popularity of a particular topic or idea. Another provides information on adwords. I have personally used a few of these online tools, and sure they helped give me an sinsight into the mechanics of writing and publishing. Would certainly recommend these tools to aspiring writers!

Overcoming Nervous Nelly - Exploring the Harmful Effects of Anxiety on Performance

Overcoming Nervous Nelly - Exploring the Harmful Effects of Anxiety on Performance | Writing about Life in the digital age | Scoop.it

A colleague is out sick, and suddenly it's fallen on you to deliver a crucial client presentation. The saliva dries up in your mouth, your heart races. You briefly consider heading home sick yourself, before moving into the conference room to discover your boss has decided to sit in. If you were in danger of failing before, now your anxiety has made failure a foregone conclusion.

We've all experienced the crippling effects of job performance anxiety. But far from being uniquely relegated to nightmare scenarios like the one outlined above, anxiety is a pervasive aspect of office life, says Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Alison Wood Brooks.

Wow, this is something that many of us have experienced at some time or the others in our professional lives. In many cases it is about salvaging the situation and making the best out of it. Performance anxiety sure hit you hard! It drives away the ability to think rationally and in a cool manner. In many cases, the boss expects the goods to be delivered and he or she may not be bothered about what you are going through! I guess you can pray to God for some inspiration or just trust that you are going to do your best!

Interesting to see the performance difference from a simple reframe. What we say to ourselves before we are about to present, or indeed perform in some other way, has a real impact on our results. Anxiety is normal (http://www.speakingandpresenting.com/public-speaking-anxiety.html) and so is self talk. Make sure you are repeatedly telling yourself how exciting the situation is and how much you are looking forward to it. Lose the typical doomsday inner voice.
