Over the years, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has morphed from a production company free-for-all to an agency shindig to a place where serious people insist that “serious business is actually getting done.” There is also, thankfully, a lot that remains unserious in Cannes. This is the cradle of cutting edge trends and what-were-they-thinking lapses in judgment. To make sense of what we’ve seen this week, here’s what’s in and out at Cannes 2016. (For easy reference, here’s last year’s list. Remember Periscope?)
Great storytelling is a great differentiator.
Imagine you're walking down the snack aisle at a grocery store. How do you make sense of the hundreds of choices on either side of you? What's going to be on your mind when you decide what to buy? Perhaps you choose one product over another because that company donates a percentage of their proceeds to a great cause. Or maybe you choose it because it has more protein -- and you were just reading this article about how protein helps boost concentration, and you've been having trouble concentrating at work recently.
People like making decisions quickly, and it'll be easier for them to choose your stuff if your message resonates with them. After all, content helps people travel through the inbound marketing methodology so that, someday, they might buy something from your company and spread your company's story with others.
But, as you may have noticed, a lot of people are trying to tell stories these days. How are you going to set yours part from the pack? And where on earth do you begin creating compelling stories for your brand?...
... According to a study by YuMe and Nielsen, between 2010 and 2012, millennial males have cut their TV viewership by 10% — more than any other demographic. YuMe found that if advertisers moved 10 to 30% of their TV budgets to Internet and cross-platform campaigns, they increased their reach up to 11%.

2013 was a year of exploration for brands on social media. From testing Vines to launching Instagram ads, many companies were dabbling in social media efforts across the Web just to see how customers would react. Now, in 2014, brands are geting serious. They’re using the wealth of data as well as the human connection that social media can provide to develop deeper relationships with customers.
Here are seven ways brands are using social media to increase customer loyalty this year....
The Internet of Things will account for 9 billion devices by 2018 (Business Insider), mobile will account for 21% of all online purchases by 2015 (Google), and social network users will surpass 2 billion by 2016 (eMarketer). Ironically, despite the explosion of technology, channels and devices, today’s continuously connected consumers are harder to reach than ever before.!
This infographic breaks down the anatomy of the connected consumer to help your brand more effectively reach, engage and convert customers across today’s mobile and socially connected landscape....
When you think about conversion optimization, what comes to mind? Testing colors, call-to-action buttons, headlines, and other elements including text, right?
Although those elements do affect conversions, what about other design aspects such as typography?
I know what you are thinking. How the heck does typography affect conversions? Well, certain font types will affect people’s decisions in different ways. For example, if you are trying to get your users to agree with a passage, they are more likely to do so if you use the font type Baskerville....
Email marketing has become one of the strongest marketing tools in present time. Buyers are trying to reach their potential customers and consumers through emails. This is one of the most effective yet cost saving technology which allows any company to directly reach up to its customers.
Almost 70% of internet users buy online products and email marketing plays a very significant role in that. Email can efficiently carry all the information about a product that consumer can read and understand at ease.
Email communication also allows the consumer to revert back to the seller in case of any kind of query regarding their product and services....
I follow two rules in life:
1. Never trust a dog wearing a hat.
2. Never (completely) trust everything you read in a social media infographic.
However, infographics based on legitimate research and insights can be a form of digital gold dust too.
A couple great examples have surfaced recently and it prompted me to pull together 10 of the best social media and content marketing infographics I've seen in 2013....
The Internet is full of people sharing interesting things all day. From liking pictures on Facebook to retweeting cool articles, sharing is something everyone enjoys doing in one way or another. Yet receiving likes and retweets can seem impossible.

Below is a screen grab of a masterful interactive data visualization. This narrative-driven piece byPitch Interactive manages the extra-tricky task of balancing heavy subject matter with a clear story and compelling visuals. It's a glimpse into the future of data-driven storytelling. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the piece is that it wasn't commissioned by a media organization. It was built by Pitch as a way to explore and understand this complex topic. Bravo. The full data visualization is here — it's worth watching, and scrolling over for a more in-depth view.
In honor of Pi Day (3/14) we took a dive into our library to suss out some Pie Knowledge, and ended up with the above appetizing infographic revealing the flavor breakdown of the 85,748 “pie” search results from our library. Yes, we know that “Pi” equals 3.14159… and not “Pie,” but we couldn’t resist the delicious comparison. Any way you slice it, this is some tasty data, and our mouths water for data here at Shutterstock.
Email campaign success depends upon subscriber engagement. You can analyze subscriber engagement by answering some simple questions: What time do your readers normally browse through their inboxes?... One of the most important conclusions is that sending newsletters during readers’ top engagement times of 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. can increase their average open rates and CTR by 6%. However, optimizing email timing takes more than awareness of top engagement times. As our research points out, it’s a combination of many factors, including knowledge of time zone differences, your subscribers’ daily routines and the practices of other marketers. Find out more for yourself:

The chemical and psychological makeup of our minds affects how we consume content: Our brains are wired to connect with compelling stories.
Brand storytelling tactics focus on different functions of the brain related to understanding and perception. The brain processes images 60 times faster than text, and 92 percent of consumers want brands to create stories around ads. Because of this, marketers should be delivering linear content with clear narratives and using images to tell their stories.
OneSpot has put together the following infographic to demonstrate how storytelling affects the brain and how brands can cut through the noise to offer stories that resonate with readers....

Social selling is at the core of what we do as marketers but one piece of the puzzle has been missing. We've forgot about the power of relationships. In a recent study, Introhive found that 98% of sales professionals believe that relationships are the most important aspect of sales. It sounds obvious when you hear it, but it’s rarely where time and efforts are spent. Thousands of professionals around the world are wasting time cold calling new prospects while ignoring the customers they already have. As a result, these customers are finding services and products at their competitors because they invested in building and establishing that relationship.
I've seen many businesses, primarily those in advertising and SEO, lose clients because they didn’t focus on the relationship. Don Draper once said, The day you sign a client is the day you start losing one. And it’s the truth. You need to focus on building a relationship with your clients that is built on trust and a clear understanding that you’re both looking to achieve their goals together.
You can do this by spending time on Twitter finding great content to share with your clients or taking them out for dinner. You might be surprised how easy it is to improve your relationships with existing clients and potential prospects using content marketing techniques or an old fashioned phone call. It’s the little gestures that can help take your relationships to the next level and make your career and business prosper....

With thousands of infographics posted on a daily basis, it can take a lot of work to get your latest creation the online attention it deserves. This can be problematic if you've invested the time, money and resources and the infographic fails in promotion.
