I ask this question a lot. It seems that others do, too. Our first take on coming up with the ideal length of all online content proved quite useful for a lot of people.


I’d love to see if I can help make it even more useful.


Along with all the best tips on optimal lengths for tweets, blogposts, headlines, and more, I’ve added a few additional lengths to the list—the ones that came up most often in the comments of the last post, like SlideShare length, Pinterest length, and more.

Every so often when I’m tweeting or emailing, I’ll think: Should I really be writing so much?


I tend to get carried away. And for the times that I do, it sure would be nice to know if all this extra typing is hurting or helping my cause. I want to stand out on social media, but I want to do it in the right way.


Curious, I dug around and found some answers for the ideal lengths of tweets and titles and everything in between. Many of these could have been answered with “it depends,” but where’s the fun in that? Solid research exists to show the value of writing, tweeting, and posting at certain lengths. We can learn a lot from scientific social media guidelines like these. Here’s the best of what I found....

The best piece of advice to just get started is to just get started. I (and many other novice writers) fear not getting it perfect out of the gate. There’s a nugget of wisdom in only commiting to do the first 80% of the writing. That is, get it about 80% of the way there. The first draft. Unpretty. Unpolished. Then pass it to someone you trust for edits and critiques. This helps keep momentum going and prevents you from getting stuck, unsure how to pull it together or finish it up.
