HbbTV 2.0 to go mainstream in 2016

HbbTV 2.0 to go mainstream in 2016 | Media, Business & Tech | Scoop.it

The first commercial deployments of version 2.0 of the hybrid broadcast/broadband standard HbbTV are now likely to surface in the second half of 2015, with mainstream adoption taking place the year after, according to the HbbTV Association – currently holding its annual Symposium in Paris.

Proposed features for HbbTV 2.0 include improved support for HTML-5, push-VOD, ad insertion, HEVC video and MPEG-Dash – plus the introduction of companion screen app-launching and synchronisation.

It had been hoped the specification would be nailed down around half-way through 2014, but Kirk Edwardson, co-chair of the HbbTV Marketing Group, said that 2.0 was still moving through ratification and final approval.

“Late this year/Q1 next year, we should be into final ratification, and starting then to turn that over to commercial suppliers […] to start to implement,” he said. “So I think we should start seeing our first 2.0 services and devices in the second half of 2015. 2016 is probably where you’ll see it really blossom.”

When Will H.265 HEVC Arrive and What Will it Mean for MPEG DASH?

When Will H.265 HEVC Arrive and What Will it Mean for MPEG DASH? | Media, Business & Tech | Scoop.it

The latest draft of the high-efficiency video coding codec appears to point to early 2013 for the final specification.

Last year's MPEG standards buzz was around DASH (dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) which provides a standardized way to segment H.264-based MP4 files for fragmented delivery. This year's end-of-year buzz may very well be around the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) codec set to replace H.264.

So how does this move to H.265 impact DASH?

Adobe announces Project Primetime video platform, Access DRM for HLS and DASH profile in HDS

Adobe announces Project Primetime video platform, Access DRM for HLS and DASH profile in HDS | Media, Business & Tech | Scoop.it

If you've been wondering what Adobe had in the works after laying Flash Player for mobile to rest, the wait is over. The outfit has unveiled the codenamed Project Primetime, the "industry's first fully integrated video technology platform" that will offer television-esque viewing sessions across your web-enabled devices. This tech plays nice with all "major" mobile platforms -- including iOS -- as well as desktop operating systems and smart TVs (Windows, Mac OS, Apple iOS, Google Android, Samsung SmartTVs and other platforms).

--PR highlights--

Adobe Access 4 software will support native iOS apps, extending its existing support for desktop operating systems, Android apps and connected TVs. Adobe Access support for HLS/iOS is expected to ship in spring 2012.

Adobe streaming technologies will support MPEG-DASH, a set of emerging standards for streaming multimedia content over the Web that will help reduce technology fragmentation. Support for MPEG-DASH, which is expected to become a profile of HDS, comes as Adobe continues to collaborate in this area with a large number of industry partners. At the same time, Adobe will continue to innovate and develop its HTTP streaming protocol, HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS), which is used by major broadcasters worldwide.
