Joe Boutte's curator insight, May 10, 7:43 AM

What will universities look like, do, or become in order support the workforce for a sustainable future?  This research provides some interest global perspectives on the skills and approaches evolving in higher education based on a paradigm shift known as "Future Skills Turn" .  This is a shift in education that emphasizes the development of skills needed for the future workforce, driven by rapid technological advancements, globalization, and evolving societal needs. This approach focuses on cultivating skills such as critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and lifelong learning, rather than solely on traditional academic knowledge.

The impacts on higher education include curriculum transformation, technology integration, industry collaboration, and lifelong learning.

This shift not only prepares students for successful careers but also empowers them to make meaningful contributions to a sustainable and equitable world. As we consider the value of current approaches to higher education, this is an important set of perspectives to consider as leaders.

Singapore. Case Study on “National Policies Linking TVET with Economic Expansion: Lessons from Singapore

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

There should be a clear mission and vision in articulating the role of TVET within the national education and training system. A key challenge today is remaining true to its mission in staying focused on vocational and technical skills. The real tests of success are the employability of the graduates, career development, upgrading in the educational system, public acceptance and image. Ultimately, the effectiveness and responsiveness of a TVET system would be measured by its impact on the social and economic development of the nation.

Does Higher Education lead to Employment?

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Maintaining high education standards can directly affect a country's standing in the global economy. For example, in the USA, 4 out of 5 people who are unemployed only have primary or secondary levels of education. Students are staying in education longer to gain an advantage in the workplace, with emerging markets such as Brazil and India providing a surge of applications. Some countries, such as Norway, are spending taxpayer money on higher education, while advanced economies such as the UK, are cutting education spending as part of austerity measures.

European Union. Education and vocational training policy

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

In education and vocational training policy, decision-making is done by the ordinary legislative procedure. According to the principle of subsidiarity, education and training policies as such are decided by each European Union (EU) Member State. Therefore, the role of the EU is a supporting one. However, some challenges are common to all Member States — such as agein g societies, skills deficits of the workforce and global competition— and thus needs joint responses and countries working together and learning from each other.

Additionally, a comprehensive list of CPE offered by study participants from the last two years was generated, which demonstrates how these three areas drive EMS CPE.

US. How Adult Education Can Help Close the Skills Gap | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

It is impossible to ignore the skills gap that exists in today's labor market and the fact that thousands of job openings go unfilled because too many individuals lack the skills to perform these jobs. Policymakers have stressed the importance of equipping adults with the skills sought by employers and providing pathways to training programs. But before we can define solutions, we must take a step back and examine the current education system, specifically the adult education pipeline.
