When LinkedIn announced that they'd be opening up their publishing platform, Pulse, to the public in February 2014, the professional network suddenly turned into a more interesting destination for marketers to explore.
What does my mom's tomato sauce have to do with this? Well, while many were quick to see results from the new platform, others felt hesitant about whether or not they should give it a go. And without a clear formula for how to approach the unfamiliar territory, many continue to remain sidelined today.
Unwilling to leave good marketers behind, we've put together a roundup of everything you need to know before you hit publish on LinkedIn Pulse. From topics, to structure, to timing, this post will have you up to speed in no time....
If you haven’t had great success with social media, I urge you not to give up. You just need to keep learning and testing until you find the right tactics for the right situation.
I’d like to give you a complete strategy filled with effective tactics that complement each other.
But to do that, I need to focus on one particular social network: LinkedIn.
I’m going to give you a strategy that you can use to produce as many B2B leads as you need (provided you have the manpower to put behind it)....
As a B2B startup, we’ve found LinkedIn really powerful in pin-pointing new potential customers. Where LinkedIn falls down is actually connecting with those people (does anybody actually read their LinkedIn messages?… mine is just filled with InMail spam from recruiters). Fortunately we’ve worked out a couple of tricks.
Email Hunter and ReplyApp.io combo. The Email Hunter Chrome extension will find anybody’s email address from their LinkedIn profile. Does it work 100% of the time?… no, but it’s pretty damn good.
Once we’ve identified the person we want to contact, at the touch of a button we’ll (almost always) have their email. That’s where ReplyApp.io comes in.
ReplyApp.io automates your sales outreach. Essentially you can pre-write follow-up emails that are sent only if you don’t get a reply. With all the time you save not having to follow people up, it will feel like your sales team has been multiplied by 2 or 3. We love it and are very happy to have finally made the discovery after researching about 20 different competitors (in fact I’ll write a separate blog post on this if anybody is interested, because finding the right tool was painful — we were using our own custom solution for a while)...

The basics of using LinkedIn for business: The goal with LinkedIn should almost always be to generate leads (and subsequently sales).
To do this, you start with your network on the site. The larger your network, the more potential you have to engage with someone in your network, who might become your customer.
That’s why I’ve dedicated this post specifically to strategies that will help you build the most effective network possible, both in size and quality....
LinkedIn, that workhorse of social networks, lacks a lot of the excitement of its peers. It doesn't have Facebook's 1 billion daily active users, Twitter's real-time cachet or Snapchat's undying millennial devotion. For professional utility, however, spending a few minutes a day on LinkedIn can bolster relationships, attract talent to your organization, and support both your employer's brand and your own.
Here are eight ways I've found to get value out of LinkedIn without eating up too much of your time...
LinkedIn's evolution began in May 2012 with the acquisition of SlideShare, and it continued withthe purchase of news reader app Pulse. Later that year, the social network got into the original content game with the launch of the LinkedIn Influencer Program, which features posts from the likes of Richard Branson and Suze Orman. And by February 2014, they opened up their publishing platform to all members.
All of those moves have turned LinkedIn into a place where people come to consume professional content. That's been great news for brands, since it's given them a new audience to reach with their content -- via their Company Pages on LinkedIn.
Let's look at 12 businesses that are capitalizing on the opportunity and rocking it. I think you might be surprised to find that both B2B and B2C companies are working to get the most out of their pages....

On Oct. 14, the company will start unveiling those updates, rolling out revamped Groups on the desktop and a standalone iOS app. (An Android app is also in the works.) The app will offer push notifications for Group conversations.
The changes, reported first by Venture Beat, are aimed at improving the quality of conversation within a feature that many complain is often filled with spam and self-promotion. LinkedIn says the changes were made after studying internal data and soliciting feedback from thousands of users. The general sentiment: Make Group controls simpler and tighten the reins on membership.
The biggest change — the one that LinkedIn believes will make a qualitative difference — is that all Groups are being made private; only Group members will be able to see the contents of conversations, and only members will be allowed to contribute. LinkedIn also won’t allow search engines to crawl the discussions, another key, it believes, to providing a trusted private space for people to communicate....

I have to be honest here, setting up and optimizing a LinkedIn profile takes time. This is not going to be a "Clean Up Your LinkedIn Profile In 5 Minutes" kind of post. So while it will only take a few minutes for you and I to run through these suggestions, be prepared to spend a considerably greater amount of time actually implementing some of them. Fortunately, once done, you can relax, have a glass of wine, and just pop back into your profile every few weeks or months to make a couple updates.
Before we jump into these recommendations, let me make one more point perfectly clear. These are not necessarily recommendations for the perfect LinkedIn profile if you're looking for a job. I am writing this from my own perspective, as someone who is using their LinkedIn profile to connect with influencers, partners or prospects. I already have a business and I am counting on LinkedIn to help me grow that business and reach more of their nearly 200 million active monthly users....
There are many advocates of using a mutual LinkedIn connection as the basis of reaching out to a prospect, but I think the process in practice is flawed. There are far more direct ways to get into a conversation with a prospect with far better results.
To recap what the LinkedIn connection outreach process typically looks like: - Build a list of prospects you want to talk to. - Mine their profiles for mutual connections. - Email the mutual connection and ask them if you could use their name in a message to your prospect, or even ask them to make the recommendation themselves. - Send an email to the prospect saying you have a shared contact that trusts you, and therefore the two of you should talk.
I have tested this extensively. I’ve had some successes and quite a few failures too. After reflecting a bit, there are three main reasons I’d suggest this is no longer an effective strategy....
In the age of selfies, bad photography runs rampant. Duck lips, bathroom pictures, too close close ups -- the list of photography faux pas is seemingly endless.
A poorly angled selfie or two (or 100) might not be so bad on Facebook. But put those same pictures on LinkedIn, and watch your connection accept rate take a nosedive. The following infographic from Sales For Life visually depicts the top eight LinkedIn profile picture no-nos, from using an out of date photo to posting a snapshot of your cat. (Note: Photos of your cat are acceptable on all other places on the internet.)
While it's important to have a picture -- your profile is 11 times more likely to be viewed if you have a photo -- it's just as important that it's not one of these....
That’s why LinkedIn is releasing a vastly redesigned version of the Pulse news reader app (out today for iOS and Android) that it purchased back in 2013. Akshay Kothari, co-founder (and now LinkedIn project manager) of Pulse, said that in the first three years, the company made tons of content deals to get as many top publishers as it could on board, and it grew to 30 million users in that time — but that wasn’t enough to thrive as users transitioned to mobile.
"One missing piece of the puzzle was identity," Kothari says. "We didn’t know who our users were, and that was the key thing to start making smart [content] recommendations."...
Sending generic LinkedIn requests -- we all do it from time to time. I'm certainly guilty of it.
Maybe you're in a rush. Maybe you're lost for words. Maybe you think the recipient of the request won't care. Hey, it's not like "I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn" is offensive. What's the harm? But as it turns out, generic LinkedIn requests can take a drastic toll on how the recipient views you. We all knew this from anecdotal stories, but now there's hard data to prove the damaging effect.
HubSpot's survey report "Is Social Selling Creepy?" shows that buyers and consumers react quite differently to a generic request than a customized one. Just look at the following two charts:...
