Even though things have gotten quiet around Vine in recent months, the announcement to can it altogether came as a surprise. After its launch in 2013, the service that lets its users create and share 6-second looped videos, had quickly gained popularity among young creatives. Not unlike its parent company Twitter, Vine had failed to become a mainstream hit though, and ultimately the competition from the likes of Instagram and Snapchat proved too strong.
As our chart illustrates, we could have seen the end of Vine coming for a while. According to an analysis by Markerly published earlier this year, even Vine’s most popular users, those with more than 10,000 followers, had started turning their back on the service prior to this year. Less than half of Vine’s most influential users posted a video in 2016. The majority of influencers, celebrities and brands had already moved on to the next big thing – a clear sign of a platform’s imminent decline.
Vine will not be an infinite loop. It was four years ago this month when Twitter bought Vine for a reported $30 million, but now the relationship has fully withered. On a Medium blog post, Twitter revealed that it's shutting down the looping video app in the coming weeks.
"You'll be able to access and download your Vines," the post read. "We'll be keeping the website online because we think it's important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website."
How long the Vine videos will live on the website is unknown, but creation of the mobile app's six-second clips has already been halted. It's a fairly surprising move....

Disney has had talks about a potential acquisition of Twitter, we’ve confirmed. They’re working with bankers now to determine whether the deal makes sense, multiple sources have informed us. While some reports have suggested that Twitter could fetch $30 billion, we are hearing that the price tag is much lower. Twitter stock is currently trending upward on the news, and Disney’s downward. At the end of last week, Twitter’s market cap was below $13 billion on Thursday, before rumors of a possible Salesforce acquisition broke. Twitter’s market cap is now almost $20 billion, suggesting that investors believe it could optimistically fetch that price. Disney, which owns media properties like ESPN and ABC, is hoping that the social media platform could amplify their reach. Twitter has also been dabbling in content partnerships, including one with the NFL. Successful implementation of these partnerships could also prove to be beneficial to a media conglomerate like Disney....
Twitter is about to make a big change to the way that tweets work, The Verge can independently confirm. Beginning September 19th, the company will cut down on exactly which types of content count toward the platform's 140-character limit. Media attachments (images, GIFs, videos, polls, etc.) and quoted tweets will no longer reduce the count. The extra room for text will give users more flexibility in composing their messages. Twitter first announced plans to stop counting extras like photos, videos, and user polls toward the limit back in May, but gave no firm date on when the shift would occur. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by The Verge. The date comes from two sources familiar with the company's business, but plans for the rollout could change. Another new adjustment to the character limit is that usernames will no longer count when they're at the beginning of replies, giving users additional room for discussion. It's unclear whether all of these changes will occur simultaneously; certain content types may gradually stop counting against the character limit in stages. But the company will at least kick off the move next Monday....

In other words, recurring themes continually appeared in many of the tweets that I studied. Here are the top 10 Buffer tweets and the elements that made them great:...
A search on Google will now display relevant tweets from Twitter in addition to its other results, a move aimed at adding a real-time element to Google.
For businesses, though, it’s an opportunity to get content to show up organically in the search results, which can increase traffic from people who are SEARCHING for a solution to a problem your business solves.
Pretty cool, right?
There are a few simple things you can do to optimize your tweets and increase your chances of showing up in search (not to mention Twitter search) and have Twitter and Google working for you.
Columnist Chris Kerns takes a deep dive into the profile descriptions for millions of Twitter users to bring you insight into why you need to look beyond just tweets to target your audience. Social media is as much about sharing information as expressing a certain kind of image to the rest of the world. Being able to choose the moments we want to share (and leave out the ones we’d rather not) gives users the ability to curate a public perception — a mix of who we really are and who we want to be.
But these self-identifying labels are not just in messages; they’re also in our profile descriptions. Some people choose to list their job, others an allegiance to a favorite sports team. By looking at profile descriptions for millions of Twitter users, we can see some interesting patterns emerge about how groups of people describe themselves....
Twitter is looking to get small business owners more involved in its service with its latest standalone app. Similar to tweet-tracking platforms Tweetdeck and Hootsuite, the new Dashboard app lets businesses monitor chatter about products, key words or hashtags that might escape direct "@" mentions. They can also schedule a lineup of tweets, see a more detailed readout on how tweets perform and even get auto-generated suggestions for potential messages. For instance, the app could surface a praising tweet from a customer that a business might have otherwise missed, then prompt the brand to retweet it or respond in a certain way. While bigger brands with dedicated social media teams have access to more sophisticated tools through Twitter's partnership program, the free app is geared towards small and medium-sized companies that are just interested in the condensed, easy-to-use basics....

Donald Trump is more popular than Hillary Clinton on Twitter -- with both humans and machines.University researchers who track political activity on Twitter have found that traffic on pro-Trump hashtags was twice as high as pro-Clinton hashtags during the first presidential debate. But the team of academics, led by Oxford University professor Philip Howard, also found that 33% of pro-Trump traffic was driven by bots and highly automated accounts, compared to 22% for Clinton. Bots are automated social media accounts that interact with other users. Some are able to answer basic questions and serve a customer service function, but they can also be used to spam and harass people....

Twitter has just made a big change to the way tweets work. From today, Twitter is cutting back on what types of content will use up its 140-character limit. Now, @names in replies, media attachments (like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls) and quoted Tweets will no longer be counted against the valuable 140 characters that make up a tweet. This allows for richer public conversations that are easier to follow on Twitter and ensures people can attach media to tweets without sacrificing the characters they have to express themselves. Twitter first announced this update back in May but didn’t quite confirm a date when these changes would reach Twitter’s 300m+ users. However, today the company confirmed theupdate has been rolled out. ...

Anyone paying attention to the technology world over the past few years can tell you that Elon Musk is… different. He thinks differently from most CEOs — most notably leveraging his fortune to build an electric car company that no one said would work, and two other companies at the same time. He talks differently from most CEOs, diving deep into theories on humanity and gushing about science fiction more than discussing balance sheets. But the best measure of how he’s different is how he acts, and there’s no better place to see that in action than on Twitter. On Twitter, Musk (@elonmusk) is an anomaly. He not only has more followers than his own car company (@TeslaMotors), but he also has more followers than @Ford, @Chevrolet and @Chrysler— combined. His personal account gets mentioned on Twitter more often than any American car company and sees more engagement than any of them. All without the help of ad budgets and teams of social media strategists. So what is Musk doing on social media that marketers can learn from? How has he continued to build a base of followers who hang on his every word? I mined his Twitter feed over the past year to find out and found three strategies from his social activity that we can all learn from....

This chart from Statista shows how Twitter's Vine shrunk. Unfortunate, but the platform was too limited in its six-second length and features.
