In our 2012 review of the top free video editors, we found 3 we could recommend with the best of these as good as many commercial products.
1. VideoPad : http://goo.gl/I7wSY
The non-commercial free version of VideoPad from NCH Software is easy to download and install with minimal setup. Once installed it is immediately ready to use and because of how easy it is to use you can begin editing video and audio right away.
With more than 20 built in effects and 35 transitions VideoPad comes well equipped to handle just about any basic project.
2. VirtualDub : http://goo.gl/KTtII
VirtualDub is an impressive Open source package that is regularly updated by its author. Note that it doesn't handle some video formats like DVD or MP4. And like all video software, it needs a pretty fast PC. It's a very reliable program that with the right amount of knowledge can accomplish just about any task.
The package is however not complete without the additional filters. A comprehensive collection of third party filters, 74 Filters for VirtualDub, is available from a French site. Just click on the "Download VD filters (1.72MB)" panel/button to download the complete set of filters (RAR pack).
3. Pinnacle VideoSpin : http://goo.gl/5azdp
Another major contender in the world of video editors is a corporation named Pinnacle. Pinnacle is a software company that creates high quality video editing software for professionals and individuals alike. Recently they introduced a freeware program called Pinnacle VideoSpin.
The software itself is very flashy and contains many useful features. However, many features are blocked and even omitted in the free version. For this reason it is not my most highly rated software. But for the user who is just looking to do simple editing, the program works fine. It comes packed with many pre-installed titles and credits.
