Innovation in health should be understood as a public health strategy which is not limited to technological advances in terms of products and services. Fostering innovation in the field of public health interventions, prevention strategies, health system management and in the organisation and provision of health services and medical care, including health promotion and disease
prevention interventions, has the potential to improve public health outcomes, enhance the quality of care to patients and respond to unmet needs, and also to foster the competitiveness of stakeholders and to improve the cost-efficiency and sustainability of health services and medical care. Therefore, the Programme should facilitate the voluntary uptake of innovation in health, taking into
account the common values and principles in European Union Health Systems.
The general objectives of the Programme shall be to complement, support and add value to the policies of the Member States to improve the health of Union citizens and reduce health inequalities by promoting health, encouraging innovation in health, increasing the sustainability of health systems and protecting Union citizens from serious cross- border health threats.
The financial envelope for the implementation of the Programme for the period from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2020 shall be EUR 449 394 000 in current prices.
