Objectives pursued
The uptake of Research and Innovation (R&I) results created under the Framework Programme is important for the programme’s success and is instrumental in contributing towards transformative impacts on the economy, society and policy making. Impacts are seen as an effect on, change or benefit to
the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life.
The Commission will award on an annual basis a recognition prize to reward beneficiaries that have successfully used their research results to create value for society. The beneficiaries must be able to show proof of effective exploitation and uptake of their research results. This action aims to illustrate the wider socio-economic benefits of the EU investment in R&I and to encourage project beneficiaries to best manage and use their research results.
In particular, five winners will be selected by the evaluation jury for their achievements. The prizes are monetary and each of the five winners will receive EUR 10.000. The prizes will be awarded during the Award Ceremony with a selected audience of high-level representatives and promoters of innovation in industry and public sector. The Commission will further promote the winners by inviting them to provide testimony in other major events.

Please also be aware that participants that have already received an EU or Euratom prize cannot receive a second prize for the same activities.

The challenge is to develop scalable, efficient and high-impact decentralised solutions to social innovation challenges leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology (DLTs), such as the one used in blockchains.

Expected results

• pioneering decentralised solutions to global and/or local sustainability challenges
• generating positive social change by making available novel solutions for decentralising and disintermediating processes
• demonstrating the viability of solutions enabling a more even distribution and sharing of information and resources which respects privacy while providing levels of transparency
• stimulating the emerging community of developers and practitioners of "blockchains for social good" applications

This Horizon prize aims to significantly improve citizen's overall experience related to online authentication and consequently foster the widespread adoption of services and products provided within the Digital Single Market of the European Union.

This prize also complements the activities of the Cybersecurity cPPP which aims to develop Europe's strengths in digital security.

Expected Impact:

An information and communication technologies (ICT) solution that enables citizens to seamless authenticate themselves across a wide range of applications and devices. The solution should be easy to use, reliable, robust against cyber-attacks, privacy-friendly and compatible as well as affordable and open. It should be ready to benefit a wide range of the EU population, from healthy to impaired citizens of all ages.

The challenge of the prize is to improve care given during delivery in a health facility in order to reduce death and illness of mothers and babies around the world. The prize will be at least €2 million.

The Horizon Prize for the Birth Day will be awarded to a solution that best demonstrates a reduction in maternal and/or newborn morbidity and mortality and/or stillbirths during facility-based deliveries. This solution will need to be novel, safe and scalable.

The Horizon Prize for the cleanest engine retrofit will be awarded to the contestants who will demonstrate on a running vehicle a solution for an existing engine and powertrains that best addresses the issue of greatly reducing emissions of NOx, particles, hydrocarbons in real driving conditions, while ensuring low levels of undesired other pollutants also in the future. The technology should not affect the operational capabilities of the retrofitted vehicles, for instance it should not significantly increase the fuel consumption, at the same time providing sufficient dynamic performance for normal vehicle driving.

This live discussion and Q&A session is about the AAL Programme's first ever Challenge Prize for Smart Ageing using the Internet of Things, which is offering a €50,000 prize as well as expert mentoring for the winner. Judges are looking for exciting innovations that empower older people to achieve the quality of life they aspire to, socially and independently.

Specific Challenge:

The challenge consists of developing innovative solutions for the delivery of humanitarian aid based on frugal application of advanced technologies.

The indicative budget for this prize is €5 million from the 2020 budget. This is expected to be allocated in five awards of €1 million, each in a different area such as shelter, water and sanitation, energy, heating or cooling, food, hygiene and medical care.

Expected Impact:

More cost-effective, more sustainable and higher-quality innovative solutions, leading to an optimised use of humanitarian funding and an enhanced response to urgent needs in a humanitarian aid settings, notably for those in a most vulnerable situation, in areas such as shelter, water and sanitation, energy, heating or cooling, food, hygiene and medical care.

Scope:

The traditional city innovation ecosystem is opening up to new models of innovation engaging citizens. An increasing number of cities are acting as test-beds for innovation and run citizens-driven initiatives to find solutions for their relevant societal challenges.

The public domain is particularly challenged with finding effective ways to ensure the mainstreaming of these practices into the ordinary urban development process. Successful practices are particularly crucial to enhance the city's capacity to attract new resources, funds and talents, and become role models for other cities.

Scope:

Europe urgently needs more innovators to stay competitive in the coming decades and to spur economic growth. The large number of well-educated women who, for various reasons, including lack of awareness, do not consider entrepreneurship as an option, represents a tremendous untapped pool of innovation.

Awards have a strong potential to drive innovation through the recognition of achievements and the promotion of role models. Therefore, the European Commission created in 2011 a Prize for Women Innovators to increase public awareness of this issue and to encourage women to exploit the commercial and business opportunities and become entrepreneurs.

The Commission will award up to three "EU Prize for Women Innovators" and one "Rising Innovator Award" (female innovators - aged 30 years or under - at the start of their careers) following a European-wide contest.

The Horizon Prize on materials for clean air will be awarded to the most affordable, sustainable and innovative design-driven material solution that can reduce the concentration of particulate matter in urban areas.

The Challenge Prize The AAL Programme is launching its first Challenge Prize to source innovations in internet connected devices and technologies (Internet of Things) that empower older adults to achieve the quality of life they aspire to, socially and independently. The innovation should present a business opportunity which improves connectivity between older adults, devices and technologies related to any aspect of their life (e.g., home, social, work, study, transport or services). Innovations must involve older adults in the development and testing of the technology.
