The challenge of the prize is to improve care given during delivery in a health facility in order to reduce death and illness of mothers and babies around the world. The prize will be at least €2 million.

 

The Horizon Prize for the Birth Day will be awarded to a solution that best demonstrates a reduction in maternal and/or newborn morbidity and mortality and/or stillbirths during facility-based deliveries. This solution will need to be novel, safe and scalable.

The Horizon Prize for the cleanest engine retrofit will be awarded to the contestants who will demonstrate on a running vehicle a solution for an existing engine and powertrains that best addresses the issue of greatly reducing emissions of NOx, particles, hydrocarbons in real driving conditions, while ensuring low levels of undesired other pollutants also in the future. The technology should not affect the operational capabilities of the retrofitted vehicles, for instance it should not significantly increase the fuel consumption, at the same time providing sufficient dynamic performance for normal vehicle driving.

This €1 million prize addresses the issue of the unnecessary use of antibiotics, which is contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. The challenge is to develop a rapid test that will allow healthcare providers to distinguish at the point of care between patients with upper respiratory tract infections that require antibiotics and those that can be treated safely without antibiotics.


The contest has been launched and will run until the end of 2016. Contestants can submit their entries until 17 August 2016.

Specific Challenge:

The goal of this contest is to improve the quality of citizens' health and well-being by helping them to better monitor their food intake with the use of a food scanner.


Expected Impact:

This Horizon 2020 Inducement Prize will thus be awarded to the most significant development towards a portable solution that, alone or in combination with other devices (e.g. smartphones), will enable the European citizens to detect nutrition facts and allergens in several types of food in a precise, efficient and timely manner, using a non-invasive and non-destructive approach, with the goal to help them make optimal informed choices and to improve their health and well-being.


Scope:

The Food Scanner Horizon Prize is a €1 000 000 challenge prize which will be awarded to the technological solution(s) that will best provide citizens with relevant information about their food consumption.

The winning entries should take a step forward from current technologies and solutions in terms of food intake measurement and will have to prove economic viability. In addition, they will have to be demonstrated through clear experimental results.

 Two prizes of €500,000 are on offer for breaking the optical transmission barriers and collaborative spectrum sharing, through the EU's Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

The aim is to develop and demonstrate solutions to societal or technological challenges that have not yet been met.  Contestants including innovators, SMEs and non-profit organisations acting alone or together with other entities, can formally register for the competition starting from May 2015. The deadlines for submissions are 17 December 2015 for Collaborative spectrum sharing prize and 15 March 2016 for Breaking the optical transmission barriers prize.

Inducement prizes provide alternative opportunities to develop innovative solutions by offering a financial reward for completing a specific technological challenge. The topic HOA7 will focus on the development of an eHealth solution that enables citizens to precisely, timely and efficiently assess their food intake and provides optimal recommendations to improve their health and well-being.

The expected result of the eHealth Food Scanner Prize (prize money: €1 Million) is an eHealth solution that enables citizens to assess their food intake and provide optimal recommendations to improve their health and well-being. The solution should benefit a wide range of the EU population, from healthy citizens to citizens suffering from food disorders, obesity or allergies.

The contest will open at the beginning of 2015 and will run until the end of 2015.

The prize aims to raise awareness of the need for more female entrepreneurs and to inspire other women to follow in their footsteps.

The first prize is worth €100 000,

the second prize €50 000

and third prize €30 000.



Who can participate in the contest?

The contest is open to all women who have founded or co-founded their company and who have at some point of their careers benefitted from the EU's research framework programmes, the EURATOM Framework Programme, the Competitiveness and Innovation framework programme (CIP) or actions relating to research and innovation under the European Structural and Investment Funds (known as the Structural Funds prior to 2014).

The contestant must reside in an EU Member State or a country associated to Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme.

The company must have been registered before 1 January 2013 and have had an annual turnover of at least EUR 100 000 in 2013 or 2014.



Expected results


The Commission plans to award up to three "EU Prize for Women Innovators 2016" following a European-wide contest. The prizes are addressed to women who have founded or co-founded a company and who themselves or their company have benefitted from EU funding related to Research and Innovation. The prizes will not reward research or innovation proposed for the future, but only achievements that have been already obtained by the candidate. The contest will target women who have benefited from EU research and innovation programmes and who have combined their scientific excellence with an aptitude for business in setting up innovative enterprises. Entries will have to clearly state the involvement of the contestants in the research and innovation activities and the potential of their product or service to access the market, also highlighting the relevant economic and societal impact.
