ELIGIBLE ACTIONS
To generate a potential fund and to qualify for reinvestment measures, the film must have been majority produced by a producer/producers established in countries participating in the MEDIA sub-programme and made with a significant participation by professionals from those countries.

The film must be a work of fiction, animation or documentary of more than 60 minutes long and from a different country than the country of distribution.
The film must not consist in alternative content (operas, concerts, performances, etc.) or advertising.
For the film to be eligible its first copyright must not have been established before 2013.

The IDFA Bertha Fund supports international co-productions between documentary filmmakers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe.

Targeted Projects

  • Documentary projects by filmmakers who are nationals of a country as defined on the IBF Country List that is not a part of the Media sub-program countries. Filmmakers should be rooted in that country.
  • Documentary projects with international distribution potential, that are in any stage of production.
  • Documentary projects that will be finalized at the latest in 2019. General time frame of the project should indicate that all conditions and payments as mentioned in the contract will be finalized before 1 December 2019.
  • Documentary projects to be shot in one of the countries as defined on the IBF country list.
  • Proposals should include a global marketing and distribution strategy, preferably including a timeline.

ELIGIBLE ACTIONS
The development activities for the following audiovisual works are eligible:
- Feature films, animations and creative documentaries of a minimum length of 60 minutes intended primarily for cinematic release;
- Fiction projects (one-off or series) of a total duration of minimum 90 minutes, animation (one-off or series) of a total duration of minimum 24 minutes and creative documentaries (one-off or series) of a total duration of minimum 50 minutes intended primarily for the purposes of television;
- Fiction projects of a total duration or user experience of minimum 90 minutes, animation of a total duration or user experience of minimum 24 minutes and creative documentaries of a total duration or user experience of minimum 50 minutes intended primarily for the purposes of Digital platform exploitation. For projects presenting a user experience in a non-linear format (e.g. Virtual Reality), these minimums do not apply.

The digital platform is addressing the following types of projects: animation, creative documentaries and fiction projects intended for multiple screen-based devises, interactive projects, linear and non-linear web-series and narrative virtual reality projects.

 

Deadline

The call for proposals has two deadlines. To be included in the 1st deadline, the application for support must be submitted and received between the date of the publication of the call for proposals and 23/11/2017, 12.00 noon (midday Brussels time). To be included in the 2nd deadline, the application for support must be submitted and received between 01/12/2017 and 19/04/2018, 12.00 noon (midday Brussels time), the date of
closure of the call for proposals.

This category is designed to support innovative distribution plans for documentaries realized through international co-productions between at least one European and one non-European producer. The maximum contribution per project is €30,000. Distribution plans should seek to reach a broad global audience.

Proposals should focus on the basic communication tools that uphold a promotion and marketing strategy for the documentary which aims to reinforce distribution through a combination of the following: internet, VOD, other digital platforms and/or outreach campaigns as well as theatrical release, television, event screenings and festivals.

Entries will be accepted continuously until October 1, 2018.

IDFA Bertha Fund supports documentary filmmakers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe (see IBF Country List) by offering them financial contributions, assistance and coaching to complete their projects. Projects can be submitted in two categories:

  • Project development: The maximum contribution for project development is €5,000, which must be spent in a country on the IBF Country List.
  • Production & post-production: The maximum contribution for production & post-production is €17,500, which must be spent in a country on the IBF Country List.

Lisbon Docs is open for all European documentary professionals and has a limited number of seats for participants coming from outside Europe. Submissions are accepted from professionals, who want to take part in an intense creative dialogue and development process as well as present their project to potential documentary financiers, European television channels and producers.

 

HOW TO APPLY

Documentary projects can be submitted until 30 July 2016 and should contain a 2-page presentation of your project accompanied by visual material.

The 2-page presentation
Your 2-page presentation has to be written in English language and should include the following elements:

-  Project info: project title, status of the project, expected time of delivery, length, & format
-  The film: depending on the project this can include the story, characters, visual approach, director's note etc.
-  Contacts: name of producer, production company, director and contact information
-  Profiles: short CV & filmography of company and director
-  Financing: budget sum (total sum for the production, not the whole budget) and brief financing plan.
