Google says health projects will continue even as it unwinds dedicated health division

Google says health projects will continue even as it unwinds dedicated health division | GAFAMS, STARTUPS & INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

Google says it is ramping up its investments in health-focused initiatives even as it dissolves its single unified health division.

From consumer-facing products like sleep tracking tech with its Nest Hub smart home devices and Fitbit wearables to clinical initiatives like its Care Studio EHR search tool and its health AI work, Google has intensified its focus on health tech and expanded its reach into the healthcare market.

But those projects will now be split across Google's myriad teams and divisions as the tech giant pivots away from a unified health strategy and reassigns its 570 employees across the company, according to a leaked memo obtained by Insider.

Google Health chief David Feinberg, M.D., who joined the company in 2019, jumped ship to health IT company Cerner as its new CEO and president. The electronic health record software company announced the move late last week.

Meanwhile, the projects and teams that make up Google Health will now be scattered across different parts of Google, Insider reported Friday.

A source at Google said the company remains deeply invested in health-focused initiatives but confirmed there will no longer be a single entity at the company focused on health projects.

The teams under Feinberg will all continue on, and there will be no job eliminations or project changes.

In a memo sent to employees Thursday, Jeff Dean, Ph.D., the head of Google's research division and Feinberg's boss, said Google Health would no longer function as a unified organization, Insider's Hugh Langley and Blake Dodge reported.

Google's chief medical officer, Karen DeSalvo, M.D., who leads the team focused on regulatory and clinical matters, will now report to Chief Legal Officer Kent Walker, the memo said.

Google Health's clinicians team, which is building a tool for physicians to more easily search health records, will now report directly to Dean. The health AI group, focused on projects like medical imaging, will report to Yossi Matias, the vice president of search and AI, Langley and Dodge reported.

The move to shutter the dedicated health division signals the end of a unified healthcare strategy at Google, Jeff Becker, principal analyst for healthcare at market intelligence firm CB Insights, told Fierce Healthcare.

"They are going back to a business-line vertical healthcare strategy, rather than the top-down pursuit of healthcare at scale at Google. The fractured healthcare strategy across Google never did get resolved," he said.

He added, "Nest is still following its health strategy, Fitbit has its own healthcare strategy as does Google Search, and that's on the consumer-facing side. Google Health has an enterprise health strategy while Google Cloud has an enterprise health strategy and so does Verily. Different parts of the business are still pursuing a non-unified and non-cohesive healthcare strategy."

In a statement provided to Fierce Healthcare, a Google spokesperson said "Google deeply believes in the power of technology to improve health and wellness and we have increased our health investments across the company. This has included developing projects within Google Health, launching and expanding health-related features on Search, Maps and YouTube that reach billions of people, and welcoming Fitbit."

"Today, health is a growing, company-wide effort and the Google Health name will continue and encompass our projects that share the common purpose to improve global health outcomes," the spokesperson said.

Google reorganizes its health teams … again

Google Heath was formed in 2018 as a way to silo all of the tech giant's health efforts under one division. The company tapped Feinberg, former CEO of Geisinger Health, to lead it and develop a centralized, overarching strategy for the health-focused projects.

Back in June, the tech giant’s health division went through a significant reorganization, resulting in a downsized team and a streamlined focus on clinical and regulatory work rather than consumer-facing offerings, Fierce Medtech's Andrea Park reported, based on initial reporting from Insider.

That reorg included a transfer of nearly 20% of Google Health’s staff to other teams throughout the company, including its search division and newly acquired Fitbit.

"That was telling and a sign of another fracturing of the unified healthcare strategy," Becker said.

He added, "Google’s health strategy was notoriously fractured. We saw some early movement that it looked like this was going to go somewhere."

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Google Health created community mobility reports to aid public health efforts and worked with Apple on exposure notification technology. Google Health has built out clinical tools like Care Studio, developed an AI-powered dermatology assist tool and ramped up partnerships with health systems through its Google Cloud healthcare data products

Former employees previously told Insider that Google Health had a central business development team to explore ways the product area could make money, Langley and Dodge reported. The idea is to bake healthcare into what Google's already doing as opposed to making it a separate line of business.

And that could prove to be a more pragmatic approach to creating a revenue stream for different healthcare-related products.

"David was brought in to establish a broader aim and vision for the portfolio but other parts of the business seem to do just fine with their own niche. Maybe the more pragmatic approach is to let businesses that know those product lines verticalize them independently," Becker said.

Tech giants have struggled to rebrand as health tech companies. Microsoft tried and failed at a personal health records business. Microsoft HealthVault launched in 2007 but ultimately closed down in 2019 because of low adoption.

There also came news last week that Apple is reportedly scaling back one of its most ambitious healthcare projects. According to a report from Insider, Apple is scaling back HealthHabit, an internal application that Apple employees can use to track fitness goals, talk to clinicians and manage hypertension.

For healthcare, Google Glass still has it | Healthcare IT News

For healthcare, Google Glass still has it | Healthcare IT News | GAFAMS, STARTUPS & INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

There's plenty of potential for Google Glass in healthcare, despite reports that have called into question the technology's value.   "Glass in the enterprise is certainly stronger than it's ever been. Google is investing very heavily," said Kyle Samani, CEO of Pristine, a company that develops software for the device, during a Monday afternoon session at the mHealth Summitoutside Washington, D.C.   Samani was part of a panel that included Paul Porter, MD, director of special projects and telemedicine for Brown University Emergency Medicine, and Sean Lunde, mHealth lead for Wipro's healthcare and life sciences consulting group. They noted several use cases where Google Glass is being tested:

  • Helping specialists in ambulances to enable consultations while a patient is being transported to a hospital.
  • Performing consultations in the ER to bring in specialists faster and expedite waiting times.
  • Steaming video from the OR to the command center of a medical device company rather than have a device rep present with the surgeon.
  • Using Glass to quickly communicate information rather than sending a page.
  • Using Glass for telemedicine consults to alleviate the often-lengthy wait times for patients to see a dermatologist in person.

In a cited dermatology study at Brown's emergency department, about 90 percent of patients said they were satisfied with and would recommend the technology, according to Porter.

Almost all study patients had confidence in the equipment and would recommend it to other patients, he reported.

The caveat, however, was that nearly 75 percent of patients would have preferred a face-to-face visit rather than a telemedicine consult.

"If we're going to move to a cheaper and more accessible form of medicine, it's going to have the feeling of using a call center," Porter acknowledged.

Lunde encouraged those interested in starting a Glass pilot to do so as a way to get in tune with future technology trends.

"Screens will get smaller and more contextual and you will learn how to make that work," he said, noting that Glass' screen size requires that only the most important, relevant information be displayed.

"For us, Glass was both better and worse than the hype," Porter said. "The truth is somewhere in the middle. For certain specialties … where your hands need to be free and your eyes need to be covered, it shows great promise. It's part of what I consider part of a really bright future for telemedicine in general."

Google and Harvard map brain connections in unprecedented detail

Google and Harvard map brain connections in unprecedented detail | GAFAMS, STARTUPS & INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

The human brain is the most ridiculously complex computer that’s ever existed, and mapping this dense tangle of neurons, synapses and other cells is nigh on impossible. But engineers at Google and Harvard have given it the best shot yet, producing a browsable, searchable 3D map of a small section of human cerebral cortex.

A browsable 3D map of just one millionth of the cerebral cortex has been created using 225 million images and a whopping 1.4 petabytes of data, illustrating the immense complexity of the human brain.

With about 86 billion neurons connecting via 100 trillion synapses, it’s a Herculean task to figure out exactly what each of them does and how those connections form the basis of thought, emotion, memory, behavior and consciousness. Daunting as it may be, though, teams of scientists around the world are rolling up their sleeves and trying to build a wiring diagram for the human brain – a so-called “connectome.”

he researchers started with a sample taken from the temporal lobe of a human cerebral cortex, measuring just 1 mm3. This was stained for visual clarity, coated in resin to preserve it, and then cut into about 5,300 slices each about 30 nanometers (nm) thick. These were then imaged using a scanning electron microscope, with a resolution down to 4 nm. That created 225 million two-dimensional images, which were then stitched back together into one 3D volume.

Machine learning algorithms scanned the sample to identify the different cells and structures within. After a few passes by different automated systems, human eyes “proofread” some of the cells to ensure the algorithms were correctly identifying them.

The end result, which Google calls the H01 dataset, is one of the most comprehensive maps of the human brain ever compiled. It contains 50,000 cells and 130 million synapses, as well as smaller segments of the cells such axons, dendrites, myelin and cilia. But perhaps the most stunning statistic is that the whole thing takes up 1.4 petabytes of data – that’s more than a million gigabytes.

Headache? Sneezing? Coughing?

Google wants to make it easier for users to find answers to their symptom-related questions.

The internet search engine said Monday it's improving its catalog of searched Googled health symptoms by adding information on related health conditions that have been vetted by the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School.

Type "headache on one side," for example, and Google will offer up a list of associated conditions like "migraine," "common cold" or "tension headache."

For general searches like "headache," the company will also give an overview description along with information on self-treatment options or symptoms that warrant a doctor's visit, according to the company's post.

In Google's official blog, the company said roughly 1 percent of the searches on Google, which equals millions of searches, are related to symptoms users are researching. But search results can sometimes be confusing, and result in "unnecessary anxiety and stress," Google said.

Google cloud gets on board with HIPAA | Healthcare IT News

Google cloud gets on board with HIPAA | Healthcare IT News | GAFAMS, STARTUPS & INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

To all the developers building applications in the cloud that need to comply with HIPAA privacy rules: You've just gained a big ally.    Internet behemoth Google recently announced its cloud platform will now be HIPAA-friendly and will support business associate agreements going forward.    Google started inking business associate agreements back in 2013 when the HIPAA Final Omnibus Rule went into effect, making BAs accountable for violating certain HIPAA privacy and security rules.
This February, the company went one step further.    "To serve developers who want to build these applications on Google's infrastructure, we're announcing support for business associates agreements for our customers," wrote Google Cloud Platform Product Manager Matthew O'Connor, in a Feb. 5 company post. "We’re looking forward to supporting customers who are subject to HIPAA regulations on Google Cloud Platform."   The HIPAA final omnibus rule took effect September 2013, and it made BAs directly liable for violations of HIPAA rules. The rule also expanded the definition of a BA to include health information organizations, e-prescribing gateways, PHR providers, patient safety organizations and subcontractors with access to protected health information. Moreover, subcontractors are now defined as business associates.    After the rule went into effect, many covered entities reported having difficulties getting BAs to actually sign business associate agreements.    Healthcare IT News spoke with BakerHostetler's Privacy and Security Attorney Ted Kobus back in August 2013, right before the HIPAA final rule took effect. He said that, overall, BAs have been less prepared.

"We see them asking for help with compliance issues, business associate agreements, questions about cloud computing and general compliance questions," Kobus said.
Lynn Sessions, healthcare privacy attorney, also with BakerHostetler, works with many of the more sophisticated BAs on updating their agreements; she said the ones dragging their feet with HIPAA are the cloud providers.

Organizations "new to the party, like cloud providers who thought they were never business associates in the first place, are having to play catch up," said Sessions.

Cloud computing in healthcare is poised for explosive growth. By the end of 2013, analysts estimated the global market would hit nearly $4 billion, representing more than 21 percent growth from 2012, according to the findings of a September 2013 Kalorama report. In comparison, health IT spending over the year was only projected to increase by nearly 11 percent.

"EMR is driving this market," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information, in a Sep. 19 press statement. "Hospitals are building great systems for gathering electronic records, but they need solutions to store all of that data, and it can't be a new server wing that might compete with needed space for care."
